Three-time boxing world champion Israel Vazquez has died aged 46 after battling cancer.
The Mexican was a three-time super-bantamweight champion, who shared an iconic rivalry with fellow Mexican Rafael Marquez.
Mauricio Sulaiman, the World Boxing Council president, confirmed the devastating news.
He said: "Israel Vazquez is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife, Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times.
"Thank you, Israel, for the many great memories you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it. You are now eternal. Rest in peace, everything will be all right."
The 46-year-old made his professional debut in 1995 at the age of 17, racking up nine victories before being stopped in his 10th fight.
He picked up his first major world title with a victory over Jose Luis Valbuena in 2004.
A year later he became unified world champion after adding the WBC and Ring Magazine belts to his collection.
Vazquez lost his titles to his rival and fellow countryman Marquez in their first meeting in 2007.
They met three more times after that with Vazquez coming out on top twice before being defeated in their final meeting.
Former world champion Billy Dib, who was also diagnosed with cancer in 2022, paid tribute to the Mexican boxer.
He said: "Heartbroken to hear about the passing of Israel Vázquez after his courageous battle with cancer.
"He was not only a champion but also a true warrior in and out of the ring. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him. May he rest in peace."
Freddie Roach, the legendary trainer said: "Forever a world champion and legend in boxing. One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with – a world champion. Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace now. My condolences to the Vazquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend."
