Talks underway for Canelo vs. GGG trilogy fight

Early talks are underway for the now-annual clash between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

The pair of middleweight monsters have fought twice already, with 'Canelo' coming out on top in the rematch of one of the most controversial decisions in recent memory. Most fight fans had Golovkin winning by a significant margin in the original meeting in September 2017 but some scandalous judging resulted in a split draw and precipitated the need for a second bout. The rematch was a closely contested fight which saw 'Canelo' claim a majority decision, handing GGG the first defeat of his professional career in the process. Alvarez's promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, has now revealed that talks have begun with the aim of having the middleweight rivals share the ring for a third time on May 4 in the fight capital of the world.

"Canelo Alvarez is fighting two to three times this year, and fighting the very best. Last night, I had preliminary talks with Golovkin's people. So we threw it out there about fighting for a third time," De La Hoya told ESPN Houston, as report boxingnews24.

"Cinco de Mayo is the biggest week in boxing in Las Vegas. So we're starting talks.

"Canelo is open to anything. Canelo is a fighter who wants to fight anybody to be great, and so a third fight is a possibility.

"We're starting discussions, and we'll see where it leads from there," he added.

Golovkin has not fought since tasting defeat for the first time as a professional while Mexico's 'Canelo' successfully moved up in weight to add the WBA super-middleweight title to his collection with a frankly devastating display against Liverpool fighter Rocky Fielding last month.
