But growing ire is being directed towards United chief Ed Woodward. With continued rumours that Van Gaal has offered to resign, only to be convinced not to by Woodward, the feeling is that the Chief Exec is showing weak leadership.
There is a sense that Woodward is indeed covering his own back, and doesn't want to admit that his 'pick' has turned out to be a failure. Either that or he is involved in a messy power struggle behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
Whatever the reason, the longer that Van Gaal's reign of tedium drags on, the more it makes his boss look feckless and indecisive - especially when a manager of the calibre of Jose Mourinho is sitting around twiddling his thumbs.
