Claudio Ranieri has come out of retirement to become the new manager of AS Roma until the end of the season.
It comes just days after the club sacked Croatian gaffer Ivan Juric. The club find themselves 12th in the Serie A table, just five points clear of the relegation zone.
In a statement released today, the club said:
“AS Roma is pleased to announce that Claudio Ranieri is the new Technical Manager of the First Team.
“At the end of the season he will take on a senior managerial role, he will be an advisor to the ownership for all sporting matters of the club.
“The search for a new coach will continue in the coming months and Claudio will also have a say in this decision.”
The Italian had called an end to his managerial career back in May, finishing up with Cagliari, but has now been brought back into the game to manage the team from the Eternal City for the third time in his career.
His first spell came between 2009 and 2011 and saw Roma narrowly miss out on both the Serie A and Coppa Italia. He briefly returned to the club in March of 2019 to guide them through to the end of the season.
He is, of course, most well-known for his incredible tenure in charge of Leicester City which saw them win the 2015-2016 Premier League against all odds. Ranieri has also had stints in charge of Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid among several other clubs.
Ranieri will be Roma's third manager this season with club legend Daniele De Rossi being sacked in September before Juric was shown the door following a dismal 3-2 defeat to Bologna on Sunday.
The current Roma team possesses names such as ex-Juventus star Paulo Dybala as well as 2014 World Cup winner Mats Hummels. Former Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Mathew Ryan is also amongst the squad.
Their next game comes away to league leaders Napoli on Sunday, November 24.
