Giorgio Chiellini reveals his trick to keep Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quiet

Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini feels the power of prayer is underestimated.

The Juventus man, who will form part of his country’s back four at this summer's European Championships, is clearly a firm believer in divine intervention, judging by his recent comments on two of the best players in the world. The 31-year-old was asked at an event in Turin this week how he would rate the difference in trying to mark Lionel Messi to Ronaldo. He dealt with the Portuguese first, and claimed that keeping an eye on that trusty right foot of his is key to making sure he doesn't get the better of you.

"Knowing all about your opponents is fundamental, even the individuals. "It helps you understand their characteristics. Cristiano Ronaldo is a player you mark by trying to prevent him from coming inside on his right foot."

Naturally, having faced Lionel Messi in last year's Champions League final, the defender was then asked for some searing insight on how to stop the Argentine. And well, it's probably not far from what we would try to do ourselves.

"As for Messi, you just make the sign of the cross and pray. "Joking aside, each player has his own characteristics and you've got to make this kind of analysis."
