Harry Maguire's former teammate has said that the defender is not of the 'level' required to be Manchester United captain. Ahmed Elmohamady played alongside Maguire at Hull City but has questioned whether he is good enough to play for and captain the Red Devils. Elmohamady said that the England defender may be better suited to Leicester City, the club he played for before his £80m move to Man United in 2019.

Elomohamady and Maguire played together 61 times for Hull between 2014 and 2017 and were part of The Tigers team that won promotion to the Premier League in 2016. The Egyptian right-back, however, was not complimentary of his teammate, who has struggled during a difficult season at Old Trafford. He unfavourably compared Maguire's personality and suitability to be skipper with Cristiano Ronaldo. Elmohamady, who played for Aston Villa in the Premier League last season, also said that the pressure of being club captain could be negatively affecting Maguire. "Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn't have the level to be the Manchester United captain," Elmohamady, who is currently without a club, told beIN Sports. "Man United need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays. "Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure. However, Maguire can't handle this pressure. "So, I think that the pressure he has by wearing the captain's armband is affecting his performances. "Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League, and maybe this is his level. "He doesn't have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England."

Maguire, 29, has struggled all season during a difficult campaign for Man United. The England defender has been caught out for several goals and has at times looked devoid of confidence and form. Meanwhile, reports have suggested that some of his teammates have questioned his inclusion in the starting XI. Maguire scored an own goal for Man United in their 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, although he was arguably unlucky to put the ball into his own net.
