There is a very different feeling around the Republic of Ireland heading into the next stage of World Cup qualification, and recent results have earned us the right to believe. Famous victories over Portugal at home and Hungary away have reignited a campaign that once looked to be slipping away, and now the focus turns firmly to our next challenge in Prague.
Ireland’s win over Portugal was a genuine statement. It was not just the result, but the performance, the bravery on the ball and the belief shown against one of Europe’s traditional heavyweights. That momentum carried straight into Budapest, where we showed character and resilience to come away with another huge away victory over Hungary. Those two nights have reshaped the mood around the squad and the wider support.
Speaking ahead of the next qualifier, Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson was clear about the mindset he wants from all of us as this campaign enters a defining phase.
“We’re excited for it, not scared of it or afraid to fail. Just go for it. This is the moment we have been waiting for. Go for it”
Ireland now travel away to Czechia on March 26 knowing that another big performance could move us one step closer to a place at the 2026 World Cup. It will be a different type of test, demanding discipline, composure and control in a hostile environment, but recent results show we are capable of rising to it.
Hallgrímsson also underlined the wider responsibility on this group.
'I’ve told them they’re not just playing for the team. The future of Irish football is in their hands'
After years of frustration, there is a growing sense that this squad is building something together. The wins over Portugal and Hungary have given us belief. The trip to Czechia is the next hurdle. Now it is about backing ourselves and going for it as one.
