Irish goalkeeper saves four penalties in one game

A solid evening's work for Kieran O'Hara.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper was sent out on loan by Manchester United earlier this month and Macclesfield town were quick to snap up his services for the year. It's already turning out to be a shrewd piece of business by the Silk Men with with the Manchester born youngster not delaying in proving his worth in the nets. The town had raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 25 minutes of their second round Carabao Cup clash at the Banks' Stadium, but Dean Keates' Walsall responded quickly and they responded well. By the 64th minute, they were leading 3-2 after two quickfire goals in two second half minutes. The first of these goals came from the rebound of a penalty after that man O'Hara had denied Walsall striker and Cork man Fiacre Kelleher from 12 yards. That was penalty save number one, and it came after a number of other serious saves from O'Hara in the course of the 90 minutes of the action. And they held this lead all the way into stoppage time when Macclesfield looked dead and buried. There is no extra-time in League Cup games anymore so as to reduce fatigue based injuries and so Tyrone Marsh's injury time leveller meant this game would go straight to penalties. That was when O'Hara, who has represented Ireland at underage levels up along, stood up and was counted. A couple of his teammates missed penalties but O'Hara saved their bacon with three more penalty saves in the shootout as his side went onto qualify for the third round. David De Gea hasn't made a penalty save for Manchester United since 2016, maybe United might want to reconsider that loan deal.
