A prediction made by then-Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho looks like it may finally come true six years later.
Mourinho was in charge of the Red Devils between 2016-2018 before being replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as results and performances began to take a dip.
It was Mourinho responsible for signing a young Diogo Dalot from Porto and after his debut against Young Boys, Mourinho predicted that the full back from Portugal would go all the way to the top.
“Everyone can see the potential and everyone could see he’s a 19-year-old player who has more than 10 years to play for Manchester United,” he said.
Six years on, Dalot has made 145 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, including 26 so far this term and featured in United’s thrilling 4-3 win against Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Now, after another impressive display for United, fans of the club think Mourinho was right all along.
One fan wrote: “Mourinho was right all along when he said Dalot was a right back for the next 10 years.
“We should’ve known Dalot was nuts when Mourinho of all people pushed for a teenager,” commented a second.
“Dalot has reached levels I think only Jose Mourinho believed that he could reach. When he signed him in 2018 claiming he had our ‘right back for the next decade.’ Many hoped but by 2020 few believed. Honestly seems like he’s gonna be proven right, what a player,” added another.
The full back has been one of Erik ten Hag’s most loyal assets this season and was rewarded for his performances in the Dutchman’s first year in charge by being awarded a new contract until 2028.
