Now, over two decades on, it seems United are set for a return to grey.
Another batch of 'leaked' images are doing the rounds which all but confirm that the club's 2017/18 third kit will be grey. Shared by Footy Headlines - a website with a good track record for revealing new kits before their official launch - the images show a predominantly light grey shirt.
The graphic that's seen on the shirt - showing the statue of George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton that stands opposite Old Trafford's East Stand - is believed to have been submitted by a fan. Adidas, who invited the club's supporters to design their next third kit on their Creator Studio several months back, are said to have made a few adjustments to the design before its release at the end of July.
