Lord Alan Sugar has called for Tottenham Hotspur to appoint Jurgen Klopp as their next manager. The former Spurs chairman made the surprise suggestion on social media after another disappointing league result. Tottenham sit 11th in the Premier League following a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. The team have won only one of their last seven league games under Thomas Frank, who is now facing growing pressure.
Sugar, who owned Spurs from 1991 to 2001, shared his view on X.
“With the massive fortune of the Lewis family it would be a win win situation if they hired Jurgen Klopp in January.
Loads of money for players and a great manager. Who agrees #coys“
Klopp left Liverpool in July 2024 and announced his retirement from management. In January, he became Red Bull’s Global Head of Football. Reports have suggested he has an exit clause that allows him to apply for the German national team job if it becomes available. It is not known if he has any similar option that could allow a move to a domestic club such as Tottenham.
Klopp enjoyed major success before his move into a senior football role. He won the Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund. He also lifted the Champions League and Premier League titles with Liverpool.
Whether Klopp would consider a return to management remains unclear. However, Sugar’s suggestion has sparked debate among fans.

Sugar’s comments came as frustration grows among some Spurs supporters. The club is now majority-owned by ENIC, who hold 86% of the shares and are controlled by the Lewis family trust. Tottenham’s financial position has changed significantly since Sugar’s time. When he took over in 1991, the club was close to bankruptcy. When he stepped down ten years later, the situation had stabilised. Today, Spurs play in a modern stadium that opened in 2019 and cost around £1bn.
