Manchester United have reportedly made Gareth Southgate their number one target to replace Erik ten Hag in the summer.
Ten Hag's position is increasingly under threat and Monday's 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace has done him no favours.
The Dutchman has also been linked with the soon-to-be-vacant Bayern Munich role once Thomas Tuchel departs.
Tuchel has also emerged as one of the names in contention to replace Ten Hag at Old Trafford should United choose to part ways with the former Ajax man.
According to journalist Santi Aouna, Southgate is now United's number one choice to become head coach this summer.
He's stated that no deal is yet to be agreed between the two but the Red Devils would ideally like to agree terms and announce him once Euro 2024 has concluded.
It's widely expected that Southgate will leave his role as England boss at the end of this tournament - the fourth he'll have been in charge of.
England are one of the favourites to win the tournament in Germany and have an embarrassment of talent available to them.
United's officials are confident they can lure Southgate to Old Trafford and believe he is the perfect candidate for the job.
Michael Owen meanwhile suggested that United sack Ten Hag now and replace him with Steve McClaren on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Speaking on Optus Sports, he said: “I’ve said for a long time that Ten Hag is just not the right man for this job. I’ve been saying it for ages. He cannot, simply, cannot manage the team next season.
"We’ve played under Steve. He’s coached us. There’s no way his fingerprints are anywhere near that team. He’s a brilliant coach. And that team is not being coached at all. No way.
"There is no way on earth that he has anything to do with coaching that team. It’s impossible."
