More than 500,000 people gathered on the streets of Liverpool to witness the bus parade to celebrate winning the Premier League on Monday.
According to an eyewitness, the car-ploughing incident occurred on 10 minutes after the Redmen's bus had gone, on Water Street at around 6pm.
Merseyside police were contacted immediately, and within two hours it had arrested a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.
47 people are reported to have been injured. 27 of the them were rushed to hospital by emergency services and 20 were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Police have confirmed one child and an adult were seriously injured. Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram told BBC Radio 5 Live that four people remain very ill in hospital on Tuesday morning.
A Northern Irish Liverpool fan, Ross Welch, was another eyewitness to the event. He revealed that cars on Water Street were able to pass further up on the road, but the driver of the car navigated past a road closed sign into the crowd.
Welch told the BBC Radio Ulster's The Nolan: "Then there it was beeping and it screeched its tyres to brake.
"We had to jump to get out of the way."
He added: "It wasn't very, very close, but it was close enough that we felt we had to get out of the way quick."
Tributes are now pouring in from Liverpool legends such as Jurgen Klopp, who took to social media to reveal how devastated he was.
