"At 12:19am on Monday, police received a report of a disturbance involving a large group of individuals on Tunstall Road, Sunderland," a spokesperson said.
"Enquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and locate those involved."
The spokesperson added: "Nobody is believed to have been seriously injured and no arrests have been made."
Pickford had played for Everton on Saturday as his side beat West Ham 2-0 at the London Stadium.
The 25-year-old is originally from Sunderland, spending the early part of his career with his hometown club.
His move to Everton in 2017 saw him become the most expensive British goalkeeper, costing the Toffees £25m.
While at Goodison Park, he has established himself as England's first choice goalkeeper. He played a starring role in Gareth Southgate's side's run to the World Cup semi-finals in Russia last summer, saving Carlos Bacca's penalty in the shoot-out victory over Colombia in the last-16s.
