There was a problem with Sligo Rovers’ outrageous wondergoal, but they’re not to blame

What's done is done in Sligo Rovers victory over Limerick.

Sligo Rovers scored a 2-1 SSE Airtricity League win over Limerick in Markets Field on Saturday evening. The result saw the Connacht outfit grabbed their first league victory in a month which was enough to climb out of the bottom two. Rhys McCabe grabbed the game's opener with a real opportunist's strike. After Rovers won a free kick inside their own half, McCabe sprinted to take it quickly. He spotted Limerick keeper Brendan Clarke off his line and decided to hit and hope. McCabe's effort soared towards the goal, over Clarke's head and into the back of the net. As a few eagle-eyed Twitter users noticed, the ball was actually still rolling when McCabe connected with it. In the official laws of the game under free kicks it states:

"The ball must be stationary and the kicker must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player."

Rovers got away with that one, but it's not their job to officiate the game. That's up to the man in the middle. Limerick can feel aggrieved, but judging by that clip, not even they noticed the offence.
