The 41-year-old visited the Jan Breydel Stadium with his 7-year-old daughter Dina and the home crowd packed the terraces out with 20,000 present to pay tribute to him.
And the players gave Schoonbaert their all, winning 3-0.
After the game, Shoonbaert said "I am unbelievably happy now. "This will be a treasured memory for my daughter which she can enjoy all her life.
"My last dream has come true. I can die in peace now. I will celebrate from heaven."
He got the chance to meet Brugge goalkeeper Maty Ryan who was moved by the strength of Schoonbaert.

Schoonbaert's family announced on Facebook on Sunday night that he had been given a lethal injection.
"As he himself said, we must look up... there we will see a star that shines, that's Lorre...
"He will forever be treasured, loved and missed... Lorretje was brave until the last minute, had everything under control and had enjoyed his last moments with people who were close to his heart."
There will forever be a piece of Schoonaert at Brugge as he left a note with the club which read: "Thank you to all the fans of the Club for the unbelievable and moving standing ovation...
"Thank you everyone. YOU NEVER WALK ALONE!!!"
