Indeed, a major criticism of Van Gaal is that he continues to pick the misfiring striker despite his poor form. So it can't have been easy for the Manchester United captain to face the cameras and speak about the current dross that is United's form.
But he did, and for that at least he deserves some credit. It's an intriguing watch. He says all the right things - backing the manager, stressing the unity of the squad - but there's no bullishness or defiance about him. Rather he seems extremely subdued and almost broken.
