Okay, we have explained our logic on this one for the U.S. Open.
We also explained it for The Masters before that, both times nothing materialised.
But the love runs deep for Tyrrell Hatton and we can’t give up on him now.
Also, he finished tied fifth at the British Open last year, all about being good on them Links.
Graeme McDowell – 35/1
G-Mac grew up playing in Rathmore Golf Club, only a couple of miles away from Portstewart.
The 2010 U.S. Open winner knows the lay of the land and should be able to negotiate his way around the course like no other player in the field.
He, of course, will have the hometown advantage but also has boasted some pretty decent driving stats on the PGA Tour this year which means that he shouldn’t be spending too much time in the thick rough, a key to winning on Links.
Lee Westwood - 40/1
This is a guy that still has plenty to give, and at 40/1 he could be worth backing.
Westwood is no stranger to the Irish Open but has never actually won the tournament.
The Englishman has been agonisingly close to winning a British Open beforehand and has a decent track record playing Links courses.
His form this year hasn’t been the worst, having only missed one cut and has a couple of top 10’s under his belt too.
Padraig Harrington
We couldn’t leave him out, could we?
Winner of the British Open in 2007 and 2008, 2007 Irish Open winner, 2006 Alfred Dunhill Links winner, it’s no secret that the Dubliner knows how to play Links golf.
Irish golf fans still hold hope that the 45-year-old still has something special up his sleeve and maybe just maybe this is the week.
After it looked like he could very well have been forced into early retirement, Harrington showed at the Travelers Championship that he still has plenty of golf in him after shooting a 66 in the first round.
Harrington hasn’t had the best of years so far but that’s when he always seems to come up with the goods. When no one is expecting him to.
Soren Kjeldsen
The Dane is ranked 77th in the world but should be a man to keep on your radar this week.
The 42-year-old finished fifth in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match play back in March but his better results come from playing in rough and ready Links including a ninth place finish at last year’s British Open.
Kjeldsen also had a strong seventh place finish at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and was 19th at the Irish Open last year.Quiz: Name the players with the most top-25 finishes in Masters history
