Rory McIlroy has revealed he received messages from two global sporting stars in the aftermath of his US Open heartache.
In pole position to win the major, McIlroy bogeyed three of the final four holes, paving the way for Bryson DeChambeau to come in and steal the title off the Holywood-born star.
The world number two avoided his opponent and the rest of the media before taking a two-three week break away from golf.
"Rafa Nadal and Michael Jordan [sent text messages]," he told The Guardian.
"Two of the most unbelievable competitors that have ever been in sport.
"MJ was maybe the first person to text me after I missed the putt on the 18th but both of them got in touch very, very quickly.
"MJ reminded me of how many game-winning shots he missed. Really nice."
After returning to action last weekend’s Scottish Open, where he finished in a six-way tie for fourth place, McIlroy is now preparing for one of his biggest tasks, the Open Championship.
