Rory McIlroy, on the Saturday evening in Rome, was in a tight and tense match against the American duo of Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark.
Cantlay drained a super putt on the 18th and Joe LaCava, his caddie, got carried away, and then some. As McIlroy lined up a crucial putt, LaCava whooped it up on the green, much to the chagrin of the Northern Irishman and his teammates.
The Netflix documentary, Full Swing is out for a second season and The Ryder Cup takes up the final two episodes. Needless to say, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy are both involved in a few scenes.
One moment of previously unseen footage shows Lowry bellowing for Joe LaCava to clear off as McIlroy is preparing to putt. Lowry declares, "Hey Joe, get out of the way, you p***k! Hey Joe, f**k off! F**k off!"
After McIlroy misses his putt, Lowry did not take long to rush on and confront the Team USA caddie. The following exchange is picked up:
The following day, McIlroy and Lowry went out and secured 1.5 points [McIlroy won his match, Lowry halved his] as Team Europe won 16.5 to 11.5 to take the trophy back from American hands.
Shane Lowry was referring back to his first Ryder Cup experience, in Wisconsin, when both he and his wife were subjected to heckles by home fans. There were not many Europeans at Whistling Straits, as there were Covid-19 travel restrictions in place.

Almost as soon as Tommy Fleetwood secured The Ryder Cup for Team Europe, in Italy last September, the victors could look back and laugh at the Day 2 drama. Shane Lowry was certainly able to revel in the moment he went from agitated spectator to car-park peace-maker.
SHANE LOWRY: Joe, you were on top of him when he was putting. You were on top of him when he was putting. You were right in line with him.
JOE LACAVA: I wasn't in his line, I didn't get too close to him.
SHANE LOWRY: We were in Whistling Straits, as well, okay? Ye get it when ye are here. We get it when we are there. It's all fun and games, that's just the way it is.
JOE LACAVA: I just wanted to celebrate though.
SHANE LOWRY: I was in Whistling Straits two years ago, okay? Let's just leave it at that. We'll see you tomorrow.
