"I should have shot 61, lads!" exclaimed Shane Lowry as he approached his father Brendan and the Irish media pack at the PGA Championship yesterday.
Fresh from one of the best rounds of his career, the County Offaly man was in positive but level-headed form as he weighed up his chances heading into the competition's final day.
Lowry stands tied in fourth place on Sunday morning with a scorecard of 13-under; a score matched by Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland, but only bettered by Sahith Theegala (-14), Collin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele (both -15).
“You just can't take anything for granted in this game,” Lowry told the Irish Independent after his stunning round on Saturday.
“You feel like when you play your best golf, you're never going to shoot a bad score again.
“But it's just a game and what I’ve learned over the last 15 years is how to deal with the ups and downs of professional golf.
“I feel like I ride the waves pretty well and I take it on the chin and just move on."
Although another impressive round at 7.25pm this evening would give him a great chance at securing his first major since the 2019 Open Championship, he is in no hurry to get overly emotionally invested in the final round's importance
“If I'm successful tomorrow, it'd be great. But if not, it's not the end of the world either," he explained with the wisdom of a man who has experienced disappointments from this position before.
"I wanted to give myself a chance on Saturday afternoon and give it a run from there. And that's what I'm doing. And it's pretty cool.
"It's nice to have a chance to win another big tournament."
