On Ladies Day of the Royal Ascot horse racing event, 42 people received medical assistance on-site due to heat-related illness, racecourse officials have confirmed. A Royal Ascot spokesperson said one person was taken to hospital.
The horse racing event attracted over 41,000 spectators on Wednesday, with temperatures hitting 29.7C. The spokesperson added that water is being provided to all attending for free and additional gazebos and parasols had been installed.
Amber heat health-alerts were issued across the whole of England on Thursday morning, following a period of yellow heat health-alerts. Temperatures are likely to exceed 30C for the first time this year.
The UK Health Security Agency said "significant impacts are likely" for health and social care services, including increased demand. They also warned a rise in deaths, particularly among those aged 65 and over.
The five-day event was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, which is known as a highlight in the UK racing calendar. More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the Royal Ascot which ends on Saturday.
