Johnathan Parkes, one of New Zealand’s leading jockeys with over 1,000 career victories, has sadly passed away at the age of 35.
Parkes, known for his success in big races, secured 12 wins at Group 1 level during his impressive 22-year riding career.
The news of his sudden death shocked the racing community.
Parkes, who was from Whanganui on New Zealand’s North Island, had not ridden since September 7.
His passing was confirmed by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) in an official statement.
“On behalf of the New Zealand Racing industry, NZTR is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of highly respected jockey Johnathan Parkes overnight. Our thoughts are with Johnathan’s closest family and friends at this time."
Parkes leaves behind an extraordinary legacy in New Zealand racing, having ridden over 1,000 winners throughout his career, with 62 black-type victories, including 12 at the highest Group 1 level.
The racing world now mourns the loss of a talented sportsperson, and tributes have poured in from across the industry, remembering Parkes not only for his success but for his dedication and professionalism.
