Former UFC fighter and son shot during attempted robbery

Former UFC title contender Mikey Burnett and his son are recovering in hospital after being shot in an attempted robbery.

Burnett, who competed three times for the promotion in the late nineties, was shot three times when armed bandits tried to rob him in Tulsa.

Tulsa based outlet News on 6 broke the story on Tuesday.

Tulsa police said, as the father, Mikey Burnett, and son, Freddie Burnett, got to their car, two men walked up and tried to rob them. We're told Freddie tried to fight off the suspected robbers when they held up his dad.

Police said Mikey was shot three times in the abdomen and Freddie was shot once in the leg. Police said Mikey was taken to the hospital for surgery. Both are expected to survive.

Burnett ended his stint in the UFC with a 2-1 record, scoring wins over Eugenio Tadeo and Townsend Saunders (UFC 18), with his only loss coming to Pat Miletich for the welterweight belt at UFC 17.5

Burnett’s brother, Scott Burnett confirmed on Facebook that both Mikey and his son Freddie, were getting in their car when the attempted robbery took place.
