Chiesa received quite a nasty cut on his forehead as a result of McGregor's actions. He was subsequently pulled from his scheduled fight with Anthony Pettis which ultimately meant he missed out on his paycheck.
As well as this, given the drama that surrounded Khabib's continual change of opponent going into the main event, it is perfectly conceivable that had Chiesa not gotten hurt in the attack, then he may have been granted a title shot.
He has since decided to take legal action against the Dubliner and is currently locked in a court case with the two-weight world champion.
Speaking on the MMA Hour on Monday, Chiesa revealed that not only him, but his family have been receiving some sickening online abuse from fans of "The Notorious".
"I'm gonna tread lightly with this, obviously I can’t say a whole lot. But it just has not been good," "Even my girlfriend and my mom get messages and comments. They're not a part of this and it’s kind of a shame when — my mom’s a sensitive lady and I do my best to protect her and stuff. And when she tells me about some of the mean things that are getting sent her way it's really, it's a shame."Chiesa added that he can take the abuse, he may even expect it, but his family shouldn't have to go through the same ordeal as him.
"Anybody can say whatever they want to me," he added.
"This is about me, this isn't about my family. And, you know, today hasn't been great."
While it is very unfortunate that Michael Chiesa's family has had to go through this terrible ordeal, the welterweight newcomer stated he doesn't hold it against all MMA fans.
"I hate hearing people say, 'MMA fans are the worst.'
"I don't want to say that because I think MMA fans are great but in the same sense I don't ever see people that don't like LeBron James say volatile, mean ass s**t about him," "But for some reason MMA fans, they throw a lot of shade to a lot of the athletes and it can be pretty bad."
