WATCH: Cowboy Cerrone gives foul-mouthed response to Conor McGregor ‘quitter’ claims

It is a shame that this fight looks unlikely to go down in 2016.

For Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone, it was not supposed to happen like this. In December, Cerrone took on Rafael Dos Anjos for the UFC lightweight belt. If he won, he would have his first taste of gold and a lucrative PPV fight with Conor McGregor. He lost to RDA inside two minutes. Twice in recent weeks, McGregor has rounded on Cerrone and his mental fortitude. In his latest interview, with Severe MMA, McGregor declared:

"Cerrone p**sied out on that big time. He's fighting again this week or sometime soon. Ask [Jose] Aldo if he can fight this weekend. He cannot fight. When you win by KO, by stoppage, by a true stoppage, you put your opponent out of action for 10 months to a year. "Cerrone quit in there inside that Octagon. That's why he can go now next weekend and say 'Oh, I fight every week' and this and that; you can fight every week if you go in and quit. If you were willing to die in there, you wouldn't have those turnarounds."

Cerrone, who takes on Alex 'Cowboy' Oliveira this Sunday, took his right to reply to McGregor. He said:

"Conor called me a quitter but I didn't even get started in that fight. How can you call me a quitter when I got my ass whipped before I even got started?"

After one Facebook commenter told Cerrone that McGregor was right and he would never be a UFC champion, he responded:

"I appreciate [the feedback] but I'm gonna keep on fighting and I'm going to keep drinking beer so fuck you. How about that?"
