The Irish out-half debate took a few more twists and turns this afternoon.
Sam Prendergast produced what was his worst performance in green, before being hauled off in the second half with the game at 10-10.
Jack Crowley made an immediate impact off the bench, with huge energy and speed, as he threw some delicate passes right on the gain line.
However, he will be bitterly disappointed with an awful missed touch right at full-time.
After defending for their lives on their own line, a James Lowe intercep brought Ireland back into Italian territory.
A few phases later they were awarded a penalty eight metres from the Italian line, and a chance at a crucial try bonus point.
Crowley unfortunately kicked the ball dead.
After the game, Andy Farrell praised the out-half, despite the late error, and revealed that the Italians were possibly infringing when it occurred.
He said: "I thought Jack played outstandingly well when he came on.
"I'm actually gutted for him, because he wouldn't normally do that.
"I mean there's a few things to check there.
"I suppose offside, and jumping up and down in his eye line for the kick.
"But still it was a bit of a shank.
"But that wouldn't be my overriding thought, I thought he was outstanding when he came on."
