Second division Argentina club San Telmo have confirmed that their midfielder Camilo Nuin died on Wednesday evening.
The 18-year old was reported to have been undergoing knee surgery to treat meniscal and cruciate ligament injuries.
The cause of death is not clear, but local reports say an investigation is underway to discover the circumstances surrounding the teenager's passing.
San Telmo released a statement expressing their sorrow over Nuin's passing.
They said: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Camilo Ernesto Nuin, a player in our youth and reserve divisions, who was undergoing surgery today,
"The club will remain closed today as a sign of mourning.
"We join his family, friends, and team-mates in this difficult time and remain at their disposal for anything they may need."
The player joined San Telmo after stints with Boca Juniors and Independiente youth academies.
The Argentine Football Association also released their own statement extending their condolences to the midfielder's family.
The AFA said: "The Argentine Football Association, through its president Claudio Tapia and executive committee, expresses its sorrow at the death of Camilo Nuin and extends its condolences to the player's family."
The AFA president, Claudio Tapia, wrote a separate post on his own X account on the tragic incident.
Tapia said: "A very sad piece of news that shakes the entire football world."
Nuin was a player for San Telmo since 2022. He previously was in the youth academies of Argentine clubs Boca Juniors and Independiente. The Argentina midfielder played over 80 youth games for the clubs.
