Aston Villa will play in a new-look kit for their Champions League opener against Young Boys on Tuesday evening and it’s for a very good cause.
Acorns will adorn the front of the players’ shirts after principal partners, Betano, donated the space back to the club who in turn donated the space to Acorns Children’s Hospice.
Villa’s long-standing relationship with the hospice began in 2008 when they were a permanent fixture on the shirt.
President of Business Operations at Aston Villa, Chris Heck said: “We are delighted that Betano came to us to offer up the opportunity and ask, ‘who are the best beneficiaries of the space’.
“It was an absolute no-brainer to bring Acorns back onto the front of the shirt, an organisation close to the hearts of everyone involved with Aston Villa.”
Vicki Rowles, Director of Fundraising at Acorns Children’s Hospice, said: “We are extremely honoured to have our logo featured on Aston Villa’s shirts for their UEFA Champions League debut against Young Boys.
“Help can’t wait for the children and families who desperately need us. Thanks to the support of Aston Villa and the global exposure of the Champions League, we can reach even more families in need.
“We’re truly grateful to our friends at Aston Villa for their continued dedication to Acorns. We wish the team the very best of luck for tonight’s game.”
Fans were quick to praise the club on social media with many saying it was ‘fantastic news’ and another said: “Class act that.”
One fan said: “Great news. Now to make this a permanent deal for all matches … Is it possible to buy shirts with Acorns on as the sponsor?”
Others said it made them love the club even more.
It is a historic night for Aston Villa who are returning to this level of football for the first time in 40 years.
