Barcelona reject St George’s cross away kit design

It's that time again.

While there's plenty to be excited about as the business end of the football season nears, this is also the time of year where leaked images of next season's kits start doing the rounds online... One of the first bits of new kit news comes from Spain where, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo, the mighty Barcelona have knocked back a proposed design from Nike for their 2019/2020 away kit. The predominantly white shirt, pictured below, features a large red cross set on its front - representing the cross of St George, which also features on the club badge. St George - Sant Jordi as he is known in Barcelona - is the patron saint of Catalonia, explaining Nike's thinking for their design. Despite this, there is a slight problem... Barca, you might have heard, have a pretty high-profile rivalry with another Spanish team who play most of their matches in an all-white kit. Because of this, the La Liga champions' board flatly rejected the shirt - claiming the colour white was simply not an option. The report from MD also makes reference to the controversy caused by former kit manufacturers, Kappa, when they decided to add a white stripe on the arms of the club's home shirt. It's understandable that an almost entirely white shirt has been deemed a bad idea by the club's decision makers.
