Bastian Schweinsteiger should never have flown to Germany as an injury replacement

That's that so.

Louis van Gaal will be livid with the news out of Germany's training camp. Bastian Schweinsteiger's season looks to be over and, with it, his chances of playing at Euro 2016 after picking up an injury in a Tuesday morning training session. The Manchester United midfielder, who only joined up with the squad as injury cover, suffered a partial medial collateral knee ligament tear. https://twitter.com/DFB_Team_EN/status/712645810580811780?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw A statement from the DFB [German football union] reads:

"The 31-year-old captain suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee following a challenge at the end of training on Tuesday afternoon. "The diagnosis was confirmed following an MRI scan at the practice of team doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich earlier today. "He will receive further treatment at his club Manchester United in consultation with the medical department of the national team."

This is a further setback for the German, who has had an injury-hit first season in the Premier League. Schweinsteiger needed to prove his fitness to van Gaal after coming in for criticism from the manager on United's pre-season tour to America. He then settled in well before sustaining a knee injury in the home draw with Chelsea. Schweinsteiger was not back long from injury and was featuring off the bench for United. He was credited with helping the side salvage their FA Cup campaign in the draw with West Ham but was on the bench again for the recent win over Manchester City. As he had only featured intermittently, Schweinsteiger had been left out of the German squad. That changed with Die Mannschaft were hit with a spate of midfield injuries. Schweinsteiger flew to the rescue only to be hobbled himself. It will be interesting to discover the identity of the player that injured him in that Tuesday training session.
