Brendan Rodgers reveals that he tried to sign Thiago Alcantara for Liverpool

He wanted Thiago Alcantara. He got Luis Alberto.

In 2013, Brendan Rodgers was in his second season as Liverpool manager and he was in the market for an attacking midfielder to compliment his playing style. Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas arrived from La Liga but Rodgers has since explained how he wanted a much bigger name after some Spanish scouting. Now Celtic boss, Rodgers has revealed that he attempted to bring Thiago Alcantara, then of Barcelona, to Anfield but the Spaniard's heart was set on a move to Bayern Munich, the club for which he has gone on to feature 82 times. “I used to often come to see the lower categories of Barca, Nolito was in youth, Soriano in the reserves with Thiago,” Rodgers said ahead of Celtic's Champions League clash with Barca. “I tried to sign Thiago for Liverpool, but could not because he wanted to sign for Bayern. “I’ve seen many games of Barca’s youth football and I love how the club works and its values.” Ah what could have been.
