Denmark striker receives death threats following penalty shootout loss

The Danish Football Association have contacted the police over death threats received by striker Nicolai Jørgensen.

Jørgensen missed the fifth and final penalty for Denmark after previous shootout misses from Christian Eriksen and Lasse Schone. Ivan Rakitic sealed a 3-2 penalty win for Croatia following Jørgensen's miss and was abused and received death threats following the loss.

"STOP. Our society must never accept death threats – not against World Cup stars, politicians or anyone else,” the governing body said. “That is totally unacceptable and indecent. We are reporting the matter to the police to put an end to this madness.”

https://twitter.com/DBUfodbold/status/1014056873744588800 Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said on ITV that he felt that Eriksen was 'on the outside looking in' during the loss to Croatia and that he was on the periphery of events at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

"No (he hasn’t seen a lot of the ball) and I think partly that is his own fault as well too,” O'Neill said. “I think Denmark will be delighted with the way they have in a sense controlled the game. "They’ve certainly not allowed (Luka) Modric and company to dominate and I think they’ve done really fine, particularly without him (Eriksen) because he’s really on the periphery of events. “I stress ‘so far’ because he’s such a top-class player. “It reminds me of my old boss Brian Clough, he used to say to me at half time, almost every week, ‘you’re on the outside looking in’.”
