It’s their second points deduction this season

Everton have been handed a second points deduction by the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

The Athletic reports that an independent commission have been docked the Toffees another two points for breaches relating to the three-year accounting period ending in the 2022-23 season.

The second penalty drops the club to 16th in the Premier League, just two points above the relegation zone.

Everton credit fans for 'unstinting support'

Everton were given a 10 point penalty back in November for a PSR breach relating to the period ending in the 2021-22 season. This was reduced to six in February following an appeal by the club.

The Goodison Park outfit confirmed in a statement that they would be appealing the second deduction. They said: “In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted Profit and Sustainability thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/23.

On March 31, the club reported losses of £89.1m for the 2022-23 season, almost double the amount of the previous year. This was sixth consecutive season Everton reported a loss, with their debt now standing at £330.6m. However, the club argue that this is largely down to the amount they are investing in their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium.

The news comes as a big blow to Everton after their weekend Premier League win over Burnley, at Goodison Park:
