Marcos Rojo appears close to leaving Manchester United

This could clear the way for Toby Alderweireld or Harry Maguire to move to Old Trafford

Everton have made contact with Manchester United about the possibility of signing Marcos Rojo, according to reports. The Argentina defender featured for his country at the World Cup in the summer but, despite Jorge Sampaoli's men being beaten in the last 16 stage, has not joined up with the United team on their preseason tour of the United States. Reports claim that this is because he has now been informed he can leave United, bringing to an end his four-year stay in Manchester. It was claimed last week that Wolverhampton Wanderers were interested in signing Rojo, but it's now being widely reported that Everton are keen on bringing him to Goodison Park. Although the Telegraph report that his £120,000-a-week wages might prove to be a stumbling block in the deal, the Manchester Evening News appear more positive, claiming Everton are 'closing in' on the transfer. Rojo's departure is expected to free up space in the United squad for a new defender. Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his frustration at the club failing to bring in signings this summer, saying on Saturday that although he wanted two new players, he only felt one arrival was possible before the close of the window. Harry Maguire is reportedly 'convinced' he will move to Old Trafford from Leicester before the deadline, despite United also being interested in Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld.
