Smoke was seen billowing out of the stadium in the early hours and fire services confirmed a blaze started in a lift motor room
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire Service said:
"At 6.58am three crews from Salford and Stretford were called to reports of a building fire on Sir Matt Busby Way.
"On arrival, crews found a fire in a lift motor room. They isolated the electrics then extinguished the fire using two breathing apparatus, one jet and one CO2 fire extinguisher. Crews are still on the scene."
The situation is said to be under control and there are no reported injuries. It is no yet clear if the fire will impact United's fixture with Hull on Wednesday.
The South Stand, also known as the Sir Bobby Charlton stand, is the oldest at Old Trafford, with some sections dating back 100 years.

"A small electrical fire was identified quickly in the Sir Bobby Charlton stand around 7am today.
'The fire brigade attended & the isolated incident was dealt with quickly & effectively. There was minimal damage & there were no injuries."
