Former Manchester City striker Jo Alves has been arrested in Sao Paolo, Brazil after allegedly failing to pay child support, as per reports from his home country.
Jo, 37, was Man City's then-record signing when he joined from CSKA Moscow for £19m in 2008 however he failed to settle and had loan spells at Everton in 2009 and 2011, as well as Galatasaray.
He eventually returned to Brazil to play for Internacional in 2011 and most recently joined Serie B side Amazonas, who were promoted at the start of the season.
According to reports in Brazil via the Sun, Jo was arrested by police shortly after arriving in the city of Campinas in Sao Paulo for their game against Ponte Preta on Tuesday night.
The forward was taken to prison and kept overnight with a statement from lawyer, Artur Eugenio Matias, saying: "There was an arrest warrant issued in a city in Bahia (state) for a reasonably small debt.
"According to the lawyer handling the case, the debt has been paid. Jo will go through the IML (Legal Medical Institute) and then go the prison of the 2nd DP.
"Tomorrow this debt, without any doubt, will be paid, and we hope that he will be released."
Extra then quickly reported that the former girlfriend of the ex-Man City man Maiara Quiderolly commented on his arrest, with many speculating that the debt was linked to their 16th-month-old son.
As per the Daily Mail, this comes after she previously shared Instagram stories accusing the forward of missing payments when it came to child supper.
After the reports of the arrest emerged, she apparently posted on social media: "One day for the hunt, another for the hunter."
Quiderolly and Alves' son they have together is one of Jo's eight children, two of which he shares with his wife Claudia Silva, and six from relationships outside the marriage.
