German football boss resigns amid 2006 World Cup bribery allegations

The head of German football has resigned over claims that there was corruption at the heart of the process which awarded the 2006 World Cup to Germany.

Wolfgang Niersbach quit at DFB boss today, claiming he was 'taking political responsibility' for the crisis, which saw tax authorities raid DFB offices and residences of officials. It has been alleged that the German FA paid Fifa €6.7million in 2005 to help win the right to host the World Cup and the Der Taxman has begun an investigation in conjunction with public prosecutors in Frankfurt.
