Despite some improvements in the last few weeks, the task of steering Newcastle out of harm's way proved too much for him, with relegation confirmed by Sunderland's 3-0 win over Everton on Wednesday evening. While many on Twitter were quick to mock Benitez's misfortune, it soon became clear that many Newcastle fans wanted him to stay in charge of the club in order to return them to the Premier League. Garnering the sentiment of the Newcastle supporters, the city's newspaper The Chronicle, went to great lengths to persuade the former Liverpool and Chelsea manager to stay on Tyneside.
