Jamie Carragher has a pop at Liverpool fans moaning about Christian Benteke

This summer's transfer window has ticked along pleasantly. Many big deals have gone down and clubs across Europe are doing business way before it closes. Liverpool confirmed their eight summer signing on Wednesday when they introduced former Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. The Belgian's transfer sparked a glut of online posts from Liverpool fans stating how thoroughly underwhelmed they were. This has followed a trend that began as soon as 'Benteke to Liverpool' stories appeared online, airwaves and in newspapers. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has hit back at the Reds fans that have trumpeted the capture of Brazil's Roberto Firmino while moaning about Benteke. In his Daily Mail column, today, Carragher writes: 'Though 95 per cent of Liverpool supporters have never seen Firmino in action — YouTube doesn’t count — they believe he is already on his way to becoming an icon. 'He comes from Brazil, his style is similar to Luis Suarez’s and his form for Hoffenheim was brilliant, leaving fans saying: "Imagine what he’ll be like for us!"

'That is the mystique of buying players from abroad. Firmino could well be another Suarez; he could also be another Alberto Aquilani.'

For those of you that do not remember Aquilani, he was bought for €20m by Liverpool in 2009 and went on to make 18 appearances [one goal] before being shunted out, three years later, for a fraction of that price.

Carragher is not exactly effusive in his praise of Benteke. He acknowledges the Belgian is a proven Premier League scorer but admits he can be frustrating to watch at times.

'We also know when his touch has been poor and his lack of interest has been apparent. He can be devastating and infuriating in equal measure,' he opined.
