Jamie Carragher claimed that the standard of the Manchester City versus Liverpool rivalry is the greatest in the history of English football. The former Liverpool defender described the two teams as "the two best teams in the world" since they are both contesting the Premier League and Champions League. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola's sides face off at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The winner of this fixture will go top of the Premier League with seven games to play.

Carragher claims the Liverpool Man City rivalry is the greatest due to the pair being the only teams to win the Premier League since 2017. They've represented their domestic league in three of the last four Champions League finals. The 44-year-old labelled their managers as "the two greatest coaches of their generation." In 2019, Liverpool finished second to Man City despite getting 97 points, which would have won them the Premier League in 27 of the other 28 seasons. Carragher referenced rival fans becoming discontent with his audacious call, which he accepted. "Liverpool versus Manchester City has become the greatest, most intense, and highest quality rivalry in English football history," Carragher wrote in the Daily Telegraph. "There is a uniqueness to it. This is the first time the two best teams in England are the two best teams in the world, led by the two greatest coaches of their generation. "I can hear the dissent from Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea fans as I argue this. There are plenty of head-to-heads worthy of comparison."

Carragher referenced Manchester United and Arsenal as being similar. However, whilst they were battling it out at the top of the Premier League, they only made the Champions League once - Man United in 1999. He suggested neither were the best clubs in Europe for a sustained period of time, compared to Liverpool and Man City, who are setting the standard for European football. Klopp's side remains on track to becoming the first English club to win the quadruple. "Many will claim that the fixtures overseen by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at their peak were of similar quality and packed just as much of an emotional punch. To me, the parallels run out of steam when applied to European competition," Carragher added. "Even at the height of their Premier League power, when it was obvious if one club did not end the season champions, the other would - could it be argued that United and Arsenal were the two best teams in Europe?
