Carver is seen very much as a stopgap until the summer when Mike Ashley will appoint somebody with more established top-flight experience.
It's understood that Newcastle received around 80 applications for the post and that Ashley was keen on names such as Christophe Galtier, Frank De Boer and Steve McClaren who are all currently in jobs.
With a record like this, it makes you wonder how many Newcastle Brown Ales that Ashely had in him when he made the decision.
The Geordie will come up against his predecessor Alan Pardew when Newcastle travel to Crystal Palace on February 11.
Newcastle fans are, ehm, a little perturbed by the appointment.
