Jose Mourinho apologises to Manchester United fans in programme notes for derby

That humbling defeat to Chelsea has really taken its toll on Jose Mourinho.

But, credit to the Manchester United manager, he's not shying away from the responsibility and he's offered an apology to United supporters for the latest hitch in a nightmarish run of games. There is no respite for the Red Devils, as they take on arch-rivals Manchester City in the EFL Cup just three days after being humiliated by Chelsea via a scoreline of 4-0. And in the programme notes for the Manchester derby, Mourinho has personally apologised to fans of his club for what he describes as "not a United result." "As the leader of this squad I want to start by saying sorry to all the Manchester United fans around the world," Mourinho wrote. "Sunday's 4-0 defeat at Chelsea was not a United result; it was a result which made us all extremely sorry for all our supporters and we all apologise for it." The Portuguese will be hopeful that light at the the tunnel comes in the form of a positive result against City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Fans won't have turned on Mourinho just yet and they remained vocally supportive in defeat at the weekend, which is something for which he sounds thoroughly grateful. "Once again at Stamford Bridge our fans were sensational," he said. "I cannot think of another set of supporters who would be singing for 90 minutes like that when their team was losing. "They were a credit to the club and feel so sorry for them that the result could not match their performance."
