Speaking on the Guardian's Football Weekly podcast, reporter Jamie Jackson delved into details of an emotional response Man United's former manager had to losing a match.

Jackson began with:"It emerged that he smashed up a TV [after one defeat], but I was told he also started crying in the dressing room.

"I was told he was in tears, and that took staff, and whoever else was there, aback. It was an interesting development. In that context, it was a surprise," he added.

These new revelations come after earlier reports from The Athletic, that indicated Amorim had been involved with a "confrontation" with former player Lisandro Martinez.

The incident is reported to have happened around the festive matches versus Crystal Palace and West Ham, with Martinez adamant that he was ready to start after a lengthy period sidelined with injury.

Martinez believed Amorim was 'overlooking him', so the Argentine made his feelings clear through an 'intense' way.

It is understood that Amorim responded to Martinez's approach positively, handing the Argentinian World Cup winner a start in the Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United.

“I think he is a guy with a lot of character," Amorim claimed about the defender following their 1-0 win.

"He is really good on the ball. And with the quality that he has – he played in the World Cup, won the World Cup – he is used to that stress.”

“He showed today that he is a top player," Amorim added.

"And sometimes people talk about the way you defend the box because he’s a small guy. But today he did really well against the team that you just have tall players.”

Rumours are already growing over who could take over at Old Trafford, and reports suggest the two favourites for a caretaker appointment are Ole Gunnar Soksjaer and Michael Carrick.
