LA Galaxy manager suggests two career paths for Steven Gerrard after retirement

Steven Gerrard is the most 'try hard' footballer we've ever seen. Even when things were going really badly, he would always want to play the ambitious 50-yard pass, or try the shot that only had the one-in-a-thousand chance of going in. And that's what made him such a beguiling player. He did the things that no-one else could. We're not surprised that that type of attitude has impressed the good folk at LA Galaxy this summer. The former Liverpool man is learning the ropes at the MLS side but his manager, Bruce Arena, claims that Gerrard is too good for football and that he should, in fact, be working at a university he's so smart.

"If Steven didn't play football he'd be very successful at something else. He could have been a professor." "He's so articulate and bright. He could have made a success of anything. He made a pretty good decision becoming a footballer but he's a pretty sharp guy."

The former USA coach made the comments after he told reporters that Gerrard had learned all his new teammates names before travelling to LA, to help him settle in,

"By the time he got here at the end of June he knew everyone. He knew the names of players he was meeting for the first time and he knew about their qualities. "He was fully prepared. We've had other players in the past where the transition of moving their families was a major chore. With him it was already done. It was so smooth it was ridiculous."

Gerrard has, so far, played a handful of games for the MLS side but has already impressed in the Western conference. Arena feels that the former England man will return to Merseyside some day and will manage his former club:

"Steven’s next step in the game is to be a manager, no question about it." “We talk about what he’s done at Liverpool and we compare notes. Where that’s going to be, I don’t know. At Galaxy? I hope not as I’m the manager! “I’d actually love it if someone like that could replace me but I don’t think it’s going to be with the Galaxy. “I would guess he’ll go back to England and then you can guess where he might end up after that.”
