Manchester United not the only big club leading charge against European Super League

Both Manchester United and Arsenal clubs have reportedly urged caution against the move.

The Premier League clubs have urged the most caution against the formation of a European Super League, according to the Daily Telegraph. Last week, German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaks that revealed alleged plans among several of Europe's most historically successful clubs to form a breakaway Super League. Der Spiegel claimed on Friday that talks had reached an advanced stage over a competition that could start as early as 2021, but according to the Telegraph, United and Arsenal have been the leading voices in resisting the change. The current proposal, as reported by Der Spiegel, would entail the 17 clubs in Europe with the biggest TV presence, including AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich et al, breaking off from their domestic leagues to permanently compete in a European Super League. The move would be strongly opposed by the UK government, according to the Telegraph, and Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin also promised on Monday to "fight against" the idea. "It would damage football worldwide," Ceferin said. "It would be boring. To see Juve vs. Bayern every week would be more boring than let's say Juve vs. Torino. It's no question for me that I will fight and do all I can against such a league for as long as I am here. "If we are talking about a closed system, we can forget about solidarity and the development of football. In the long run, the clubs would be the losers." Bayern Munich, PSG and Manchester City have all come out and denied various allegations surrounding the Super League and instances of breaching Financial Fair Play regulations. Bayern Munich rejected claims that they have played a part in the supposed planning of this Super League. A club statement read:

"FC Bayern is also unaware of recent plans for a so-called Super League, also reported by "Der Spiegel", nor has FC Bayern taken part in negotiations relating to such plans. FC Bayern is also unaware of why it is listed in a document quoted in this context by "Der Spiegel".

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: "FC Bayern Munich stands by its membership of the Bundesliga and, as long as I am chairman of the board of FC Bayern, also by the club competitions organised jointly by UEFA and the ECA".
