The fine seems quite substantial but it is based on a system of "90 Tagessätze" meaning 90 daily rates that are worked out based on the specific circumstances of each citizen.
Crazy story in tomorrow's @bild: Marco Reus has been driving without a licence for three years. Was caught and fined €540,000
— Raphael Honigstein (@honigstein) December 18, 2014
According to an article in German magazine Focus, the 25-year-old explained that he took driving lessons when he was 18 but never actually got to the point of taking the test but, when no repercussions came of it, he just let it happen.
He said: "I then unfortunately decided to go that route. I can not comprehend the reasons even today."
The fact that Reus currently earns a weekly wage of around €65,000 means that the fine adds up to roughly seven weeks of work so it's no wonder that the winger is angling for a move away from Dortmund where he will earn upwards of €200,000.
Word of advice Sparky, whether it's England or Spain you go to, get a bloody licence this time.
