Leicester City are ‘considering’ appointing Martin O’Neill as caretaker manager

Former Republic of Ireland Martin O'Neill is in contention to return to Leicester City as caretaker manager, according to reports. The Foxes are looking for a new coach after Brendan Rodgers left the club last weekend with the team in the relegation zone. Leicester are looking at the possibility of appointing a caretaker manager until the end of the season. O'Neill and Rafael Benitez are said to be among those on the club's shortlist.

The Foxes reportedly approached Graham Potter about becoming the club's new permanent manager. The English coach, however, was sacked by Chelsea on the same day as Rodgers left Leicester, and is said to have rejected the offer as he wants some time to recharge before accepting his next role. That has left Leicester looking for a stand-in manager who can make a quick impact and help the team remain in the division. The Foxes are now considering appointing a caretaker manager until the end of the season, according to The Independent. The club's hierarchy are said to have discussed approaching O'Neill about taking the position. O'Neill, 71, is one of the most successful managers in Leicester's history. The former Ireland manager helped them earn promotion to the Premier League in 1996 and they won the League Cup twice in his four years at the club. O'Neill left Leicester to manage Celtic in 2000 and has been out of management since 2019, when he had a brief spell with Nottingham Forest. The Derry native was Ireland manager between 2013 and 2018, when Roy Keane was his assistant and they helped the national team reach Euro 2016.
