Matt Doherty linked with a return to Wolves and it makes perfect sense

This could be a great move for the Irishman.

Wolves are on the brink of resigning Matt Doherty, who had previously played for them for 10 years with a spell that spanned from 2010 to 2020. The Irishman was a fan favourite at Molineux and arguably played the best football of his career while at the club, impressing the likes of Jose Mourinho who was persuaded to sign him for Tottenham. Unfortunately for Doherty, and Ireland, his playing time was very stop start at London, and he struggled to find a decent run in the team. The change of managers didn't help his cause either and when Antonio Conte was brought in, and the flying full back was shown the exit door in the most brutal fashion. Once Atletico Madrid showed an interest, Doherty wasted no time in trying to get his career back on track.

“For me, it was kind of a no-brainer once the opportunity came and I had to take it with both hands,” he said at his Atletico unveiling. “It’s an absolute pleasure to be here. I never imagined at the time something like this would be able to happen. Back in time when I was doing everything my dream initially was to play in the Premier League.

"I fulfilled that dream, but opportunities come that are unexpected at times, and this was an opportunity I saw that if I made the move I could better myself as a person exploring different cultures and different football. “Like I said before, once the opportunity came it was impossible for me to give it up.” Unfortunately, the Dubliner failed to make an impression in Spain, featuring just twice in all competitions under Diego Simeone.
