Pep Guardiola bizarrely claims ‘everyone in this country’ supports Liverpool

'Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone'

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has claimed that 'everyone in this country' supports Liverpool after his side thrashed Newcastle United, on Sunday afternoon.

City managed to get over the disappointment of their Champions League semi-final exit at Madrid to batter Newcastle 5-0 and open a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Raheem Sterling headed the home side in front after 19 minutes, before Aymeric Laporte added a second before half-time after Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka fumbled Ilkay Gundogan's volley.

Midfielder Rodri made it 3-0 with a near-post header from Kevin de Bruyne's inviting corner. Substitute Phil Foden also scored towards the end of the tie before Sterling completed the rout to make it 5-0.

Despite increasing their lead at the top of the table, City boss Guardiola went on to suggest that 'everyone' in this country - including the media - supports rivals Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola on Liverpool's league record

While Champions League failings, at least in the knockout stages, has often been used as a stick to beat City, Guardiola wanted to make a point about Liverpool's recent record [30 years, on this occasion] in the league.  Speaking to beIN SPORTS, the 51-year-old said:

"Everyone in this country supports Liverpool, the media and everyone, so of course because Liverpool has an incredible history in Europe competitions, not in Premier League because [they have] won one in 30 years but that's not a problem at all.

He added: "Our destiny is in our hands, this is important so we have to look at ourselves."

City closing in on Premier League title

City boast a three-point lead over closest challengers Liverpool in the Premier League table, and travel to Wolves on Wednesday night hoping to move one step closer to securing the title.

On the other hand, Liverpool, who drew 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Saturday night, travel to Villa Park to face-off against Steven Gerrard's side on Tuesday night. The Reds know that three points are crucial if they are to maintain any chance of upsetting City.
